Why Mokeke left CT City

The departure of former Cape Town City midfielder Thato Mokeke, has been explained.

Mokeke was handed with his clearance on last week after spending five years with the Mother City-based club. The former SuperSport United defender has since resurfaced at Cape Town Spurs after parting ways with the Citizens.

Mokeke's initial contract with the John Commits-owned side was due to expire in June this year.

Speaking at the club's Supporters Fan Day ahead of the resumption of the Premiership, coach Eric Tinkler confirmed that the club already paid Mokeke his full settlement for the remaining six months of his contract.

"Thato was called in because his injury is a long-term injury, but now looking forward to the next season... (the question was whether) Thato Mokeke was in our plans? He wasn't going to be in our plans," Tinkler said to journalists during a press conference held at Hartleyvale on the sidelines of the Supporters Fan Day.

"So we gave him the option of staying until the end of the season or he could move now and get fully paid, which the chairman has paid him out in full of his contract so that he can start looking at other clubs.

"So he chose that option. He wanted to stay with us until this period, just to do a little bit of his rehabilitation and then look to move on," he added.

Mokeke has also played for Chippa United and Ajax Cape Town amongst other teams in his professional career in the PSL.
