BANNED: AFCON top scorer hit with shock punishment

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations' top goalscorer has now been slapped with an immediate ban just days after claiming the tournament's Golden Boot.

The Equatoguinean Football Association (FEGUIFUT) has announced the suspension of striker Emilio Nsue, as well as his teammate Ivan Salvador.

A statement on the organisation's official website confirmed that Nsue, who scored five goals at the latest AFCON, and his teammate have breached disciplinary rules and will therefore not be involved in any national team duties until the matter is resolved.

Nsue's punishment is "for incurring in several episodes of serious indiscipline, before and after participating in the National Seleccion in the 34th Edition of the Africa Cup of Nations: therefore, his competition in the National Seleccion is suspended until new warning".

FEGUIFUT added: "Ivan Salvado, on the 29th of this year, he was involved in an unpleasant incident in the city of Abidjan that led to the intervention of the police of this country, causing a notable delay in the return of the expedition to Equatorial Guinea and causing degradation in the reputation and image of both the Seleccion and Equatorial Guinea."

The decision was taken after the board of the federation met at their headquarters this week, and the pair will now serve their bans until further notice.
