Benni's role in Man Utd star's resurgence 'revealed'

Benni McCarthy's pivotal role in a certain Manchester United star's resurgence has now reportedly been revealed.

Scott McTominay proved to be the hero in United's 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, when his 86th-minute header found the back of the net to see the Red Devils secure a vital three points in their hunt for a top-four finish.

His heroics are said to have come as a reward for his exceptional work on the training pitch, a lot of which has been set up by the club's forwards coach McCarthy.

After the game against the Villans, players who did not start are believed to have attended a recovery session on Monday morning as a means to get a "match load" in their legs.

According to the Daily Mail, McCarthy had designed a drill that required players to sprint between points before having to go one-on-one with another teammate.

It also required them to switch roles and act as both the attacker and the defender.

It is further reported that McTominay has been the standout performer in, and has benefited greatly from, sessions like these, with his work ethic said to be admired by manager Erik ten Hag.

The 27-year-old Scot is developing a reputation for being a super-sub, with four of his seven league goals this season coming in appearances off the bench.

Prior to his late winner against Villa, McTominay came on as a substitute to score an injury-time brace in sensational fashion against Brentford to help his side secure a 2-1 victory earlier this season.

He also found the back of the net after being brought on in the Red Devils' 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

With his seven goals in the Premier League, the Scotland international is United's highest scorer in this campaign, with Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Marcus Rashford all behind him with five goals each.
