Opinion: Why Mbappe to Arsenal makes sense

With Kylian Mbappe seemingly set to leave Paris Saint-Germain and reportedly being open to a switch to Arsenal, the pair could be a match made in heaven.

According to the Mirror, one of the 2018 World Cup winner's role models is Gunners legend Thierry Henry, who represented the London club between 1999 and 2007 before moving to Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

Reports also suggested that Mbappe would willingly join Mikel Arteta's side as he is enticed by the possibility of following in Henry's footsteps.

The 25-year-old's contract with PSG is due to expire at the end of the season, and although the possibility of him extending his stay at the Parc des Princes cannot yet be ruled out completely, it is widely believed he will join Real Madrid after the current campaign comes to a close.

Arsenal fans, however, will be dreaming of seeing the forward in their colours under the guidance of Arteta. Currently, the Gunners are third on the Premier League, level on points with Manchester City, who have a game in hand, and two points behind leaders Liverpool. If they were to have Mbappe in their ranks, that picture could be significantly different.

The evidence indicates that he will make a difference wherever he goes. This season, the Frenchman has made 31 appearances for PSG, scoring 31 goals and registering seven assists. Those are title-winning figures that suggest the France international could be the final piece the club requires to solve the EPL puzzle that continues to trouble them.

The former Monaco star would then truly be following the example Henry set  by lifting the trophy with Arsenal just as Henry did in 2002 and 2004.

The combination of Arteta and Mbappe could also prove a deadly one, a partnership that could dominate European football for years to come. A manager like the Spaniard would also benefit the attacker greatly. It would be fruitful for any player to be in an environment led by a coach who wants to see talent being developed so that they can reach their full potential and has an intense appreciation for the diversity in a squad. That is exactly what the Spanish tactician desires.

"You go into a dressing room full of different people and different characters," the manager told Football365. The way they interact with each other, the way they talk to each other, the way they have banter with each other, the way they demand from each other, it's fascinating. They all have their own story, but they are all here in London, at Colney, together seeking the same dream. It's extraordinary. It doesn't happen in many industries and I must enjoy that."

An environment such as this, with Arteta's know-how when it comes to getting the best out of players and his desire to bring trophies to the Emirates stadium, would play a big role in Mbappe continuing his trajectory as he tries to cement himself as one of the greatest icons the beautiful game has ever seen.

Maybe a move to a promising London side vying to regain their dominance in English football would prove to be more beneficial for the star player than the glitz and glam of life in Madrid.
