Ahly chiefs assign 'special follow-up' on Bafana star

Al Ahly chiefs have reportedly assigned a "special follow-up" on a Bafana Bafana star who was one of the standout performers at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

With the Red Devils' management said to be interested in Mamelodi Sundowns star Teboho Mokoena, they reportedly plan to keep tabs on him until the current season comes to an end.

According to an El Watan source, the Egyptian club's planning committee has ordered scouts to keep track of all developments around the 27-year-old as he continues to represent Masandawana in the DStv Premiership, the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Champions League, in which they are currently joint top of Group A with two group-stage matches to go.

The source added that the 11-time CAF Champions League winners are keen to know everything related to his performances in the months ahead after becoming "the subject of great interest" for them, especially after his recent displays for South Africa in the Ivory Coast.

It is said these reports will be the determining factor when the time comes to decide whether or not the Red Devils will enter into negotiations with the player in the next transfer window.

Mokoena was part of the impressed South Africa side that claimed bronze medals at AFCON 2023, beating Morocco and Cape Verde, before losing to Nigeria on penalties in the semi-finals, and then emerging victorious from the third-place playoff against DR Congo.

The Sundowns star played an important role in his nation's tournament, with both his defensive and offensive contributions.

With the ball at his feet, the midfielder managed to complete 390 passes at a success rate of 83%, creating 10 chances, scoring one goal, registering one assist, and also converting from the spot in the penalty shootout against Cape Verde.

Defensively, he won two tackles, made six interceptions and recovered the ball 41 times throughout the competition.

There are also reports suggesting that clubs in England and France could make a move for his signature, but it remains to be seen where he will be playing his football next season.
