Johnson doubles down on transfer window call

Head coach Cavin Johnson has doubled down on his stance that Kazier Chiefs needed no new signings in the January transfer window.

Chiefs had a lukewarm first half of the season collecting just four wins in 13 matches under then head coach Molefi Ntseki.

Interim coach Johnson somewhat steadied the ship on his arrival, securing four wins in seven matches ahead of the January window.

However, the veteran coach raised a few eyebrows in December when he declared that no reinforcements were needed at Naturena. Meanwhile rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates roped in four and two new players respectively to their artilleries.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of his side's Nedbank Cup last 32 clash against Milford, Johnson reiterated his reasons for option against new signings.

"Like I said when we took over, I think a was there 48 hours when the transfer window closed," Johnson said.

"I thought If I was a coach and came in a group of people pf 30 plus and said you know what, not good enough that means I have not taken my work or the work that I can do with a group of players and make them better.

"That's the reason we did not sign anyone in the transfer window. I think what we have at the club is good enough to take them to the end of the season and get them many points and like I said earlier, get them one trophy, which they are capable of winning.

"So, it's about what we do on the pitch. How we handle those strikers because they do have quality strikers.

"Because they do have strikers. You have Ranga [Chivavaviro], you have Mshini (Nkosingiphile Ngcobo,) you have [Pule] Mmodi who can all play as strikers. Therefore, you have to work with them consistently.

"I don't think there is a team that can buy success. Yes, you buy players that can add to what you have but you need to work with a lot of things.

"With respect to the strikers, you've got to work more with you midfielders because they bring the ball to the strikers. There has to be someone that brings them the ball. How they receive the ball and how they execute the ball is what we get paid for."

Chiefs match against Milford will be played on Sunday at FNB Stadium. Kick-off is at 18:00.
