Nigeria captain terminates deal 'over unpaid wages'

Nigeria's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations captain has reportedly terminated his deal with his club due to unpaid wages.

After joining Turkish Super Lig side Sivasspor in September 2022, the 31-year-old is now a free agent amid the club's struggles to keep up with the demands of their current wage bill, according to Soccernet.ng.

Musa was called up to the Nigeria squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as the team's captain, and the side would go on to reach the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles skipper walked away with a silver medal despite not making a single appearance throughout the duration of the continent's showpiece competition.

While he was at the tournament, however, his club Sivasspor was said to have mutually agreed to terminate the contracts of five other senior players in a bid to repair their turbulent wage bill situation.

The Turkish side's situation become problematic for Musa, too, leading to his decision to part ways with the team after they reportedly owed him six months' worth of wages.

After joining the Super Lig club in 2022, the 31-year-old made just 28 appearances, with the bulk of those coming in his first season with them.

In this campaign, the Super Eagles star featured only four times, managing to score just one goal before jetting off to the AFCON in the Ivory Coast.

Musa is now understood to be working on securing a move to a new team before the next transfer window opens at the end of the season.
