African giants to weigh up and wait on Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane's name has again been linked with another heavyweight club, who are weighing up the option of bringing him on board after his Saudi Arabia assignment.

Contacts in Casablanca have indicated to this publication that Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti is already a dead man walking after his latest defeat.

Wydad were humiliated 2-0 by lowly Ittihad Tanger on Tuesday night, leaving them 22 points off leaders FAR Rabat with eight games to play.

They are in position six with third place – which secures CAF Confederation Cup football – providing the route back to continental football next season.

A Champions League place next season is already out, with the Moroccan giants 19 points away from second place, which is occupied by Josef Zinnbauer's Raja Casablanca.

Wydad were a huge disappointment in the Champions League this season as they came stuck in the group stage.

Since the start of 2020, Wydad have had numerous coaching changes starting from Zoran Manojlovic to Sebastien Desabre, Juan Carlos Garrido (twice), Miguel Gamondi, Benzarti (twice), Waild Regragui, Hussein Ammouta, Hassan Benabicha, Mehdi Nafti, Sven Vandenbroeck and Adil Ramzi.

The plan from those considering this option for Mosimane is to wait until the end of his Saudi job.

At present, Mosimane has his first ever relegation-related task with Saudi Arabia top league club Abha FC.

He has 11 games to rescue Abha from the drop and has so far won one, lost twice and drawn one.

Should he succeed in saving Abha, then chances are he will be kept in the job, though that is not guaranteed considering the Saudi coaching landscape.

Mosimane won promotion along with the Saudi first division during his time with the Jeddah club from September 2022 to June 2023 but wasn't kept for the new season.

Subsequently, the former Bafana Bafana coach had a pending case of unpaid salaries at FIFA against Al Ahli, with the world football mother body recently instructing the club to pay Mosimane in excess of R22 million owed to him.

In the meanwhile, Wydad will play at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and will hope to use that as bait to attract Mosimane.

However, while Mosimane has the CV for the job which includes winning the CAF Champions League, the issue of his financial demands could prove a stumbling block.

The 59-year-old now demands a salary of USD100 000 (approx. R1,8 million) as is the case with his current job at Abha.

Beyond that, he moves with his technical team of Kabelo Rangoaga, Maahier Davids, Musi Matlaba and Kyle Solomons.

Mosimane is familiar with coaching in the Arab countries having already worked in Egypt, Saudi Arabia (twice) and United Arab Emirates since 2020.
