AFCON boss: Why our match against SA was the most exciting

A 2023 Africa Cup of Nations boss has revealed why he believes his side's match against South Africa at the tournament was the "most exciting".

Former Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro led the Super Eagles to the final of the latest edition of the continental showpiece, knocking Bafana Bafana out in the semi-finals before losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the competition's decider.

That match against South Africa, however, seems to hold a special place in the Portuguese tactician's memory.

In that crunch tie, the sides could not be separated at full-time as well as after extra-time, with the result having to be determined by a penalty shootout, one that the Nigeria would win 4-2.

"It was the most exciting [game for Nigeria], yes, because it allowed us to play in the AFCON final, but we had a lot of really good moments during our time with the Super Eagles," Peseiro said in an interview with Sportitalia.

The Super Eagles are now without a coach after their deal with the 63-year-old expired in February, with the former Al Ahly coach having his sights set on a different challenge.

"As I said, my work with the Super Eagles is over. It was gratifying to coach players of such quality, with my staff we managed to do well in this sense, but the time has come to move on to another project," he answered when asked if he would consider taking a new deal with Nigeria.

"This was the third national team we have coached, after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and I would certainly like to be able to qualify and play with a team in the next World Cup, but every possibility is open because it would be equally exciting to coach a club team with winning objectives."
