Chiefs in deep soul-searching

Nine years without winning any trophy equates to calamity at a club of Chiefs' standing.

What is worse is that both their biggest rivals – Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns – didn't have to wait this long through their barren years.

So much must be fixed at the Naturena-based side, with Cavin Johnson only in charge until the end of the season.

For now, the question will revolve on what is left to play for before decisions on the technical team and players are finalized in the off-season.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MARCH 09: Kaizer Chie

Chiefs have 10 league games to play and need to improve their seventh-place position having accumulated 29 points.

Amakhosi sit 17 points behind champions-in-waiting Sundowns, who have played two games less.

This means Johnson and his crew can only play for second position, which is currently occupied by Pirates on 33 points.

Second place carries a ticket to the CAF Champions League and will give hope for improved fortunes next season.

Also, still there for the taking is third place, which comes with the prize of playing in the CAF Confederation Cup.

However, there remains questions on if Chiefs will need continental football next season under a new coach who must fix all the issues related to why the club has sunk so low.

In 11 league games in charge, Johnson has won five, drawn three and lost three, with two of those defeats hurting even more for the Chiefs faithful as they have come against Pirates.

Chiefs travel to Cape Town City when club football resumes on Saturday.
