African nation 'rejects' Man Utd star's nationality switch

An African nation has now reportedly rejected a Manchester United star's offer to represent the country instead of England.

With international football having been in the spotlight over the past couple of weeks, a few notable stars have confirmed an allegiance switch, trading European nations for those in Africa.

Real Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz finally switched his nationality from Spain to Morocco this month, with the 24-year-old being handed his first cap for the top-ranked CAF team during their recent 1-0 win over Angola.

Another player who has taken a similar path is former United star Axel Tuanzebe, who declared his intention to represent DR Congo this month despite appearing for England consistently throughout his youth career.

In November 2023, The Athletic reported that DR Congo had made an approach to persuade Red Devils star Aaron Wan-Bissaka to switch his nationality from England, but the right-back reportedly declined the proposal at the time.

Now, though, just four months later, it is reported that the roles have switched, with DR Congo said to have rejected the player after he had a change of heart.

According to Nigerian sports commentator and radio personality Anthony Devoyce, Wan-Bissaka privately contacted the DR Congo football federation expressing that he was ready to commit to the Leopards.

However, is claimed he was told by the organisation that they are no longer interested in his services after he initially snubbed them with the hope of being selected for England.

The 26-year-old has zero caps for the Three Lions' senior side, and was called up once back in August 2019 but had to withdraw from the team due to injury.
