Downs star: It’s pointless to dribble but not score or assist

Rising star Siyabonga Mabena has opened up on what he needs to improve on as the teenager aims to secure a starting spot in a star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns squad.

The Brazilians successfully booked their place in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup with a hard-fought victory over University of Pretoria via a penalty shootout on Friday, after the match had ended 0-0 at extra time.

Mabena, who came on as a second-half substitute in the encounter, has identified areas in need of improvement in his game.

"I have a lot to improve, I can't dribble past people and not score or assist. So, I have to improve," the 17-year-old told Sundowns media.

"I have to also work on my finishing. I have to learn to manage games and know my moments, where I should pass the ball or when I should dribble past a player. But then, I think ja, I played well, but I can improve on my finishing.

The pint-sized attacker has made just six appearances this season and is still without a single start but has already contributed one goal.

"Obviously I want to start a game, but for that, I have to work hard, I have to keep on pushing, be consistent," he added.

"I think that's all I can do. So, for now I'm very proud of myself, but I think I can work harder."

Mabena will be aiming to add more minutes under his belt when Sundowns take on Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup on the first weekend of May.
