‘I don’t know about SA, but they respect Rulani here in Egypt’

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has been given a stamp of approval in Egypt amid having become a name of interest in North Africa.

Mokwena is viewed as being capable of following in the path of Pitso Mosimane despite only being in his first full season as the sole head coach at Sundowns.

The 37-year-old is unbeaten in the DStv Premiership since taking over as the sole head coach in October 2022 and is due to add his second consecutive league title after lifting the inaugural African Football League.

He has twice come stuck in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

"Rulani is well-respected here in North Africa, especially Egypt, so I hope he is also respected the same way in South Africa," says Talal Rabie, an Egyptian agent based in Cairo.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena celebrates

"I don't know about SA, but they really respect Rulani here in Egypt and hope to see him coaching here soon.

"If in South Africa you don't embrace him as being a special 37-year-old coach, then I don't know.

"He is a modern coach with fresh ideas, who is able to compete at the highest level and is constantly seeking to improve himself just like he did when he went to Brazil recently.

"You have to respect a guy who keeps wanting to learn instead of feeling like he knows it all.

"It is for that reason that all the clubs here in North Africa hate playing against Sundowns.

"Whenever there is a draw for the Champions League, all the fans of Al Ahly and Zamalek are always talking about avoiding Sundowns.

"You don't get to hear of any team that scores five against Al Ahly, but Sundowns have done it twice, so you can understand why they are feared and respected by Al Ahly.

Rulani Mokwena has spoken out about the challenges

"There are clubs here in North Africa that would salivate to have Rulani as head coach and I'm sure it will happen in the next few years, maybe five years but hopefully less.

"I mean, it is clear for everyone to see that Rulani has improved Sundowns from where Pitso Mosimane left them.

"That is not an easy job to do, so you must respect him.

"With that in mind, I say it will be nice to have him here in Egypt and, for me, I prefer that he comes to Zamalek.

"He might be the man who will lead Zamalek to the Champions League crown again.

"I think that maybe Rulani must come to Egypt for him to win the Champions League," says Rabie.
