Downs and Rulani find new value in last four hurdles

Mamelodi Sundowns' aim to complete the course of their seventh consecutive league title undefeated will come with further new highs being planted.

As has already been long told, completing the league season without dropping three points in any match will raise Sundowns up the podium as the first 'Invincibles' ever.

The Brazilians need to avoid defeat against Royal AM, Stellenbosch FC, TS Galaxy and Cape Town City.

Through doing that, they have the most points tally of 71 to surpass, plus the most goals scored (56 goals) and least goals conceded (11 goals) records for a 16-team PSL league.

With four games to play, they need seven points plus scoring nine goals and avoiding conceding more than one.

Yet beyond all that, Sundowns could become the first ever club to beat all their domestic league opponents at least once in two seasons in the PSL era years dating back to August 1996.

To get to that landmark, they need to take all three points against Cape Town City on the final day.

Last season, Sundowns managed to get at three points from all 15 opponents, in Marumo Gallants, Richards Bay FC, Royal AM, Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United, Galaxy, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Chippa United, Moroka Swallows, Maritzburg United, AmaZulu FC, Golden Arrows, Stellenbosch and Cape Town City at least once.

It has been the same this season with Chiefs, TS Galaxy, Sekhukhune, Cape Town Spurs, Richards Bay, Chippa, AmaZulu, Swallows, SuperSport, Stellenbosch, Pirates, Polokwane, Royal AM, and Arrows having all been beaten at least once.

Only Eric Tinkler's Cape Town City is yet to suffer defeat in the league against Sundowns, who are now unbeaten in their last 50 league games.

City is also the only team that Rulani Mokwena hasn't taken all three points against since he became the stand-alone head coach in October 2022.

Mokwena has not lost a league match in 46 games since taking over as the sole man in charge at the top.

The Brazilians have not known the feeling of dropping all three points on the domestic scene since September 2, 2022, when they fell to city rivals SuperSport.
