My Muti Story: Timothy Nkosi

In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff catches up with former Moroka Swallows midfielder Timothy "RDP" Nkosi.

Nkosi says he will never forget the day Mike Mangena and Michael "Bizzah" Dlamini's muti gave former referee Ian McCleod a big shock.

Who and where?

"I will never forget what happened at Moroka Swallows during my time there. Mike Mangena was our coach. We were playing against Mamelodi Sundowns.

"That day we used a school next to Odi Stadium as our dressing room. Mangena refused to use the Odi Stadium change room, he didn't trust Sundowns coach Screamer Tshabalala. Inside the schoolyard, a small fire was made so we could jump over it several times shouting

"See me now see me no more!"

"After that we were given some stuff to smear on our eyebrows, while applying that stuff in your eyebrows you had to say, let me see them while they don't see me.

"After that, they brought our jersey which was inside a bucket, it was very wet I must say. You could tell it was soaked in some water for at least overnight.

"Our jersey was white in color but because of the muti, it changed to maroon [laughs]. The late Bizzah Dlamini and Mike Mangena were the ones who were in charge of our muti rituals at Swallows.

"That's the very same day Aubrey Lekwane's strike made Screamer Tshabalala collapse. But before that, the former referee came to the tunnel to check our cards and the jersey we were going to use, the man was shocked to see how our kit looked. He couldn't tell what color it was [laughs]. Our jersey looked red when it's actual colour was white. That's Mike Mangena and Bizzah Dlamini's muti for you."

Why were you doing it?

"They never told us anything, they would just tell us to get kitted and go to the field."

Who was the muti man?

"Only Mike Mangena and Bizzah Dlamini knew who he was. We never got to see him or her."

What did you have to do?

"Nothing much, we were just told to go and play and everything would take care of itself. There were no instructions."

Did everyone take part?

"Yes, of course, even our goalkeeper Wendell Robison took part, luckily enough at Swallows we were mostly black players at the time. So there were no issues."

What stood out?

"You know when it comes to muti, it depends on your belief, though I do believe in muti, but that day I couldn't tell if it was muti or not that helped us beat Sundowns."

What was the result?

"We beat Sundowns 2-1. Maybe it was the muti that made Screamer Tshabalala faint that night who knows? Maybe it played a role."
