Barca sink Almeria to strengthen grip on second spot

FC Barcelona are aiming to finish their LaLiga on a high following a 2-0 victory away to Almeria on Thursday night.Hector Fort, Sergi Roberto, Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres all earned re-calls to the Catalans' line-up following Monday's clash against Real Sociedad.

Xavi Hernandez's changes paid off early on Fermin opened the scoring on 14 minutes after getting on the end of Fort's cross and heading past goalkeeper Luis Maximiano.

Almeria grew stronger as the first half went on and should have been level after 23 minutes but Leo Baptistao failed to convert after being left one-on-one with Barcelona shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

While Barcelona struggled to carve out chances, the home side did go close three minutes before the break when  Adri Embarba unleashed a low strike that sailed just wide of the upright.

The hosts were made to rue those missed chances, as the away side grabbed the second goal in the 67th minute as some neat passing ended with Fermin firing home with a first-time finish to complete his brace.

Both sides responded with changes for the final 20 minutes, as Melero replaces Viera in the attack while Vitor Roque and Joao Felix replace Torres and Robert Lewandowski in the Catalans' side.

The second goal seemed to have knocked the wind out of Almeria's sail, with Xavi's charges comfortably seeing out the rest of the encounter to claim maximum points on the road.

Barcelona will be back in action on Saturday when they host Rayo Vallecano in their final game on home soil this season.
