Al Ahly stars 'promised' big bonus to beat Downs

According to reports from the continent, Al Ahly's president has reportedly promised his players one of the biggest financial incentives in the club’s history if they defeat Mamelodi Sundowns

The Egyptian giants will play host to the South African champions at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday, April 25, in the second leg of the Champions League semifinals.

In an exciting first-leg showdown at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, Ahly managed to hold the Brazilians to a scoreless draw.

Now, to motivate his players ahead of the second leg against Masandawana, Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib is said to have promised his players an interesting monetary reward.

According to Foot-Africa.com, if Ahly defeat the one-time Champions League winners, each player will receive a bonus of EGP 500,000 (R182,762).

Moreover, the 12-time African champions will award each player a record bonus of EGP 1.7 million (R622 400) if they go on to defend the trophy.

According to the report, this year's incentive plan represents a more than 100% increase over the roughly EGP 800,000 (R291,530) that Ahly players received for winning last season's title.

Should Ahly sweep aside the Miguel Cardoso-led star-studded team, they will face either of Egyptian rivals Pyramids FC and Betway Premiership giants Orlando Pirates in the final.
