The Secret Footballer: How our goalkeeper sold matches

In this week's edition of The Secret Footballer, we get to learn about the pervasive culture of corruption at Premier Soccer League clubs, albeit often only spoken about in hushed tones.

The former soccer star, who used to play as a midfielder for a few clubs in the DStv Premiership and the Motsepe Foundation Championship, reveals how a goalkeeper once made money by selling games he was involved in.

"There is a lot that is happening in our football, there are players that are being bribed to make the team lose," he reveals without blinking an eye, talking to KickOff.

"Mostly, it depends on if that particular team is involved in a relegation battle. They would then give you money as a player to make sure your team loses. This is something that I have witnessed with my own two eyes.

"As players, we started questioning why our goalkeeper was committing errors in almost every game we played. In the end, we found out that our goalkeeper was being paid by opposition clubs to concede goals.

"He was being paid to make howlers game after game. He was playing for the opposition teams.

"A lot is happening in football. There was a time when a club I played for was struggling to pay the players, then the management called the team manager, the coaches and the captain to the office.

"They informed them that only the coaches, captain and the senior players will be paid their salaries. But they were asked to keep it a secret.

"But because the captain felt sorry for the players, he ended up telling us what was being discussed.

"There is a lot in our football. Sometimes a player would sign a contract he has not even seen with his own two eyes.

"For example, the club would intentionally write the number 1 in numbers and not in words. Let's say you signed for one year. When it's time for you to leave for greener pastures, they will change that number 1 into a 7.

"You will then be surprised as a player to learn that you have a seven-year contract with the club.

"You will be stuck with that club up until they decide to release you. That's how selfish and corrupt some of our clubs are.
