Official: CAF to investigate CAFCC final chaos

CAF has confirmed that it is set to investigate the chaos that took place at the Confederation Cup final over the weekend.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat to RS Berkane in the first leg, Zamalek bounced back with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a 23rd minute strike by Ahmed Hamdi to get their hands on the continental trophy via the away goals rule.

When the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the game, the White Castle's fans were overcome with elation, and the trophy-lifting ceremony kicked into gear.

However, things would become chaotic and potentially dangerous when a large number of supporters made their way on to the pitch to celebrate the moment, and CAF has since condemned the incident, labelling it as "security breaches" and "spectator misbehaviour".

Later on, some Zamalek stars also went over to their fans to lift the club's second CAFCC trophy right in front of them.

"CAF strongly condemns security breaches and spectator misbehaviour during and after the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup second leg final between Zamalek SC and RS Berkane that was played in Cairo Egypt on Sunday 19 May 2024," Africa's football governing body said in a statement.

"CAF has referred the matter to the relevant CAF bodies for investigation and disciplinary measures if necessary, on the incidents and the behaviour of Zamalek SC, its players, officials and any other party during and after the match."

Speaking after winning the two-legged final on the away-goal rule, Zamalek head coach Jose Gomes said that encounter should be recognised for the high levels that was on show.

"The team started very strongly, and we could have scored more goals in the first half," he said, per CAF's official website.

"African football deserves recognition for the quality of this final, and we won because we stayed focused."
