Revealed: Why Spurs wonder-kid didn't play against Chiefs

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has explained why one of his most-wanted youngsters, Luke Baartman, did not feature in the last match of the season against Kaizer Chiefs.

Spurs's 2-0 home win over Amakhosi saw the sleeping giant finishing outside the Top Eight in the DStv Premiership log table, marking an end to what has been the visitors' worst season in the PSL era.

The absence of "Boere", as the talented Baartman is fondly known in football circles, caught the eye.

This was more so because the last time the two sides had met, in November 2023 at FNB Stadium, Baartman came from the bench to score a stunning goal past Itumeleng Khune.

The youngster is one of the players that form part of the Chiefs faithful's wish-list ahead of what is hoped to be a much improved season for the Soweto giants, hence the question marks regarding his absence from the team sheet on Saturday.

The highly-rated 17-year-old made 10 appearances for the Urban Warriors in all competitions, and saw a return of league goals in what was a challenging season for the Urban Warriors.

Speaking to KickOff.com, Efstathiou explained why the teenage sensation could not take part in the exciting encounter.

"The reason he was not part of the team that played against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday is because he is writing exams, he is in Matric," Efstathiou revealed.

Nevertheless, the likes of Asanele Velebayi and Ashley Cupido gave a five-star performance at DHL Stadium to heap more misery on Cavin Johnson's men, who would have been pleased to hear the sound of the final whistle as it marked the end of a season to forget for them.
