Sundowns star deserved red card, rules top ref

A Mamelodi Sundowns player was supposed to be shown a red card during The Brazilians clash against Cape Town City on Saturday, according to former referee Victor Hlungwani.

Sundowns missed a chance at replicating Arsenal's Invincible season as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to The Citizens at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The highly contested encounter had plenty of controversial calls and one of them was an incident in which midfielder Zungu reacted violently after a a dangerous tackle from behind by City's Heaven Sereetsi.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sports' SoccerZone, Hlungwani explained why Zungu should have been sent off.

"Zungu did what we call violent conduct," Hlungwani said.

"Violent conduct is when a player uses excessive force or brutality when not challenging for the ball. He couldn't hold self.

"Let's see what he did; they kicked him, which is reckless but what do you (Zungu) do? Look at the leg. That is violent conduct. He should have been sent off.

"Unfortunately, the referee did not see this action. If he had seen it, the correct decision would have been a red card."

Sundowns could also potentially find themselves in hot water after match footage revealed that the side's technical may have been using communication devices to watch the match, which is prohibited for technical team members during a game.

Next up for Sundowns is the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates to be played at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
