My Muti Story: The Swallows, Cosmos lightning incident

In this edition of My Muti Story, former Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper Silver Shabalala returns with another muti story, this time he reveals what took place before Moroka Swallows players were struck by lightning during a PSL match.

The infamous incident happened at George Goch Stadium during a top-tier match that was played back in 1998.

Swallows players Jokhonia Cibi, Peter Matshitse, and Benjamin were struck by lightning.

"I remember at that time I was still at Cosmos, I'm sure you still remember the game we played at George Goch where we were struck by lightning," Shabalala tells KickOff.

"We knew before that game was played we were going to experience some problems.

"The club's muti man first did his thing in the empty dressing room, after that, he summoned us to gather in the dressing room.

"We formed a circle, he then took out a coconut from his bag, stood inside the circle, he smashed it hard on the floor.

"Every time he did that the coconut would break into three or four pieces, with some water coming from inside of it.And we would win by three or four goals.

"But that day we played against Swallows, the coconut broke into three pieces, but no water came out, it was spoiled.

"I saw the old man who was our muti man sitting down in disbelief. Then he said to us, Mhhh, today is gonna be a very difficult day. It's gonna be a difficult game today so I don't know what is going to happen hey.

"As players, we tried to brush the whole thing aside and we went to the pitch. I remember that game was live on TV.

"In the first half, Tico-Tico scored two goals. He scored another one in the second half and the score was now 3-0.

"With only 10 minutes remaining on the clock, all of a sudden we noticed a very small cloud in the sky. But we ignored it. All of a sudden it started raining.

"The strange thing is the sun was shining, the sky was clear, but lightning struck and in a split second everyone was on the ground.

"Most Swallows players were affected. We were sent back to the dressing rooms. And because of that, the game was abandoned. That was on a Sunday.

"A replay was ordered for Wednesday, it was now being played at Vosloorus. And the final score was 3-3.

"That just proves muti works in football. Don't allow people to fool you. The muti man was some guy I don't remember if he was from Zaire or Congo. "
