Feutmba on why countryman didn't cut it at Pirates

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Roger Feutmba has reacted to the news of Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou being released by Orlando Pirates.

The 23-year-old, who came to South Africa highly recommended, has now been released by the Soweto giants.

Feutmba says both Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs should not be blamed for signing foreign players who don't add value because the quality of players in the continent has deteriorated.

"It depends on the technical politics of the team," says Feutmba, in a conversation with KickOff.com.

"At Pirates, they believe some positions may only be filled by a foreign player - positions such as the goalkeeper, central defender, and top striker. If you check properly, most of the foreign players who have come to Pirates, they are always coming into those positions.

"We cannot compare how [Mamelodi] Sundowns and other teams do it, because we will then have to bring a lot of elements like financial aspect, the philosophy of the team, and all. But Pirates did get it right with the Nigerian, Olisa Ndah. He is not a bad player," he adds.

The former Sundowns midfield general admits his countryman turned into a flop at the Houghton-based club.

"Marou arrived here known as the best striker in the Cameroonian league. Unfortunately, he didn't adapt quickly. They made a mistake, he wasn't what they were looking for, and they had to let him go.

"Pirates, Chiefs and Sundowns always try to get good players from overseas, but it also depends on finances. Now, Sundowns are scouting as far as in South America.

"In terms of African football and players, in general, the level has dropped. That is one of the reasons Sundowns is going as far as South America.

"In our time when I arrived in South Africa, there were quality players everywhere, but right now most quality players are found at Sundowns."
