Broos has his say on Percy Tau performance

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has come to the defence of striker Percy Tau following South Africa's 1-1 draw against Nigeria in last Friday's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

South Africa had to settle for a point away from home after Fisayo Bashiru's late strike cancelled out Themba Zwane's opener on matchday three of the World Cup qualifiers.

For Tau, it was a first return to national duty since Bafana's third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations. The three-time CAF Champions League winner was called up for the match against Nigeria in a bid to shield him from further criticism, according to Broos.

The Belgian had decided the verbal abuse directed to Tau as having 'killed' the Al Ahly attacker.

Tau endured similar treatment across social media over his performance against the Super Eagles, particularly after he missed a golden chance to find the back of the net in the second half.

Speaking to media in the post-match press conference, Broos explained why he decided to substitute the attacker in the second half.

"It was very tough for us if you are on the way the whole day Wednesday and that you have to play on Friday against such a good team," Broos said, citing the shocking logistical challenges Bafana endured in their trip to Uya, Nigeria.

"So, we did it on character and we did it on mentality and I think that Percy Tau was a part of it.

"He had a good chance to score also, but that is also football also.

"There were chances on the other side also for Nigeria. Again, the result is correct."

Broos' charges now turn their attention to Zimbabwe, whom they meet in another World Cup qualifier on Tuesday at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
