The Secret Footballer: I played without a contract

This week's Secret Footballer is a former Moroka Swallows player who left the club in the mid-90s to join one of the Soweto giants, and he reveals how he was sold "like a sack of potatoes".

The ex-player says things are not always smooth between club owners and players when it's time to move to greener pastures.

"I was shocked when I played for Swallows without a contract. The only thing I signed was the PSL registration form," he reveals.

"Desperation made me play without a contract. I couldn't ask, I didn't want to lose my status of being a professional footballer. I was happy to be seen on television.

"I was not even given a cent of the money that Swallows got from the club I was joining.

"The club's chairman, David Chabeli, told me straight, 'You are the one who wanted to leave, so you will get money at your new club, not here'. I didn't get even a cent," adds the former star.

The former footballer says according to an agreement he had with the Dube Birds, he was supposed to get 5% of the money that would be received from his sale but that the club never fulfilled their end of the bargain.

"Even today, I don't even know how much the Soweto giants paid Swallows for my services. It was a well-kept it secret.

"Just like that, I was sold like a sack of potatoes. So, even today, I don't know how much I was worth as a player.

"It hurts."

That he had no representative put him at a disadvantage too.

"Back then, I had no agent. I only found myself an agent after signing with my new club. Before that, I was representing myself.

"I decided to keep quiet and move on, not knowing by doing that I was taking Chabeli's wrong advice.

"It's not nice when a player or a coach leaves these clubs, there's always a big fight happening behind the scenes.

"Some clubs will even badmouth you and demand their tracksuits and soccer boots back."
