'How a PSL club coach failed me'

It's Friday, and in this week's edition of Secret Footballer, KickOff speaks to a disgruntled former Premier Soccer League striker.

The ex-star shares how a coach once set him up for failure at one of the topflight sides.

"I was a goal-scoring machine at my previous club, hence I was signed, but couldn't repeat the form at my next club," he tells this publication.

"I blame the coach in all that. Just because I was not signed by him, he made sure I didn't shine by playing me as a wall.

"I was not allowed to try the opposition goalkeeper, my duty was to hold the ball for incoming midfielders and nothing more.

"I remember at one stage I risked by taking a shot, and after that match he told me straight into my eyes, 'You do that again, you will not play in this team'," adds the secret footballer.

He says what made things difficult was that the club management was constantly on his case, asking him if they did not make a mistake by signing him.

"I could not say why. I was new to the team, and I didn't want to be victimized by the coach, so I  continued playing on the instructions of the coach, not knowing I was risking my job.

"It's difficult being a player in South Africa. Coaches always try to change players that were signed by the management.

"Because of the coach, I finished the season with only four goals, and the club management felt the tally was not enough for a player who had scored more than 15 goals at his previous club.

"Because of that, I was released by the club. Up to this day, I never found another team. I have even retired now."
