Footballer and his family killed in devastating airstrike

A footballer and his family have been confirmed to be dead after they were killed in a devastating airstrike.

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) has confirmed that Palestine star Ahmad Abu al-Atta and his family were killed in his home during a recent bombing by Israeli troops, according to ESPN.

Abu al-Atta was a defender for Gaza Strip team Al-Ahly Gaza, with it believed that the airstrike occurred on Friday, claiming the lives of many in Gaza City.

According to Iranian outlet Press TV, Abu al-Atta is now the third professional footballer to be killed by Israeli bombings since the start of the ongoing war in October 2023.

The Gaza health ministry is also said to have confirmed that Israel has killed at least 37 551 people since the territorial conflict started last year, with about 300 Palestinian sportspeople being casualties.

In May, the PFA brought a motion at a FIFA Congress demanding "decisive action" against Israel and its football association, per Reuters.

FIFA has since ordered an urgent legal evaluation of the PFA's proposal, which is backed by the Asian Football Confederation, to suspend Israel from all club and national competitions over the war in Gaza.

FIFA has since confirmed that it will address the issue at a council meeting in July.
