Ronaldo & Pepe to retire? Portugal boss responds

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has commented on the international futures of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe after their European Championship exit.

The 2016 European champions were bundled out of the tournament after losing to France via the penalty shoot-out on Friday evening.

Unsurprisingly, the topic immediately went to the futures of Ronaldo (39) and Pepe (41), who were the oldest players at the tournament.

However, Martinez says now is not the time to discuss international futures after their elimination.

"His tears are frustration," said Martinez about Pepe, as per BBC Sport.

"Pepe is a role model in Portuguese football. What he did tonight and in the tournament will stay with us for the next generations."

When asked about Ronaldo and Pepe's futures, he replied, "No. Everything is too raw. We are still suffering the defeat.

"There's no individual decisions at this point"

Former Portugal defender Jose Fonte says both Ronaldo and Pepe know the end is near for their international careers.

"They probably know it's the end of the line in the national team, perhaps. Where do you go from here?" Fonte told BBC Sport.

"They've achieved so much, they've done so much for Portugal, sometimes you just have to give your place to the young boys coming up and let them show their talent."
