England book EURO semi-final ticket

England booked their spot in the 2024 European Championship semi-finals after seeing off Switzerland 5-4 on penalties.

One switch by the Three Lions showed in Ezri Konsa ahead of Marc Guehi, with the Swiss unchanged from the dominant display over the holders Italy.

Red Crosses as the Swiss national team are affectionately known were set to earlier bit of defending and reflexes from goalkeeper Yann Sommer bailed them out as the Three Lions looked to take off.

Swiss soon upped the ante though where a forward run by Ruben Vargas involved escaping the plight of Kyle Walker before a cutback to Dan Ndoye followed, but the latter couldn't pounce.

Amidst the brighter spell highlighted by the respective nations, no opening followed thereon and forced a goalless end to the opening half.

Despite the limited activity, neither side went to the dugout to effect chances particularly in the forward arenas in the hope of lighting up the spell as a whole.

England were keen to hit the ground running minutes past the interval with Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka linking up to test the resolve of Sommer, but Ricardo Rodriguez intervened timeously.

Silvan Widmer entered from the bench and replaced Vargas before Fabian Rieder vacated to see Steven Zuber take the field as the Swiss made the first substitutions.

The Swiss were in the lead in the closing 15 minutes after Breel Embolo managed to take full advantage of a loose ball and finished at the back-post.

England managed to bounce back five minutes later as Saka came short following a layoff by Declan Rice and fired in off the far post – giving Sommer no chance, with extra-time called.

The Three Lions looked keen to go ahead shortly inside the added period where Rice picked up a pass from substitute Eberechi Eze and angled towards the bottom-corner, but Sommer parried away.

However, the Swiss responded three minutes to the end and saw Xherdan Shaqiri hit the upright from a direct corner-kick and forced Jordan Pickford to scramble away and signalled penalties.

England were decisive in the shoot-out as Trent Alexander-Arnold netted the decisive effort after Pickford denied Manuel Akanji.
