Half the price for a Ferrari? How Chiefs won Dortley race

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has opened up about Rushwin Dortley's transfer to Kaizer Chiefs, which was announced by the Motsepe Foundation-bound club on Thursday.

Amakhosi had been tracking the left-footed defender for about two years now, and they have finally landed their man.

The move saw Chiefs beat several clubs, both locally and abroad, for the Bafana Bafana international's signature.

In an article published by this website on 29 May, Efstathiou made it clear he does not think even big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns could afford his players.

"They want to buy foreigners for R40 million and R50 million, but they don't want to pay that for local players. Why? I don't know," he revealed.

"Like I told you before, I think Chiefs liked the player two years ago, so they believe in the player," Efstathiou tells KickOff in an exclusive interview.

"Dortley is a quality player. There were a lot of demands from various clubs, as far as Europe, so I think they've made the right decision Chiefs.

"The interest was both locally and abroad.

"We develop these players for a long time, so we know their character, we know what they can offer potential clubs in the future.

"So, we don't compromise because we know our product is good. You can't pay half the price for a Ferrari."

"I think they have got themselves a good player, and he is still young. Of whether he didn't come cheap... that's the question only Chiefs might answer," he adds.

Besides Dortley, a number of the Urban Warriors players have been linked with moves away from the club the moment it became clear they were headed for relegation from the topflight, but Efstathiou is mum on whether there are any more deals in the offing.

"I can never say no [on whether other players might leave too] because at this stage, there's a lot of interest in our players. But it must be for the benefit of all parties.

"We are not desperate because we know we have to keep the players to get promotion."
