'That is why we called him Screamer'

In this week's edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff honours the late South African football legend Stanley "Screamer" Tshabalala.

"Bra Stan", as Tshabalala [75] was known, was the first Bafana Bafana coach, he recently succumbed to bullet wounds he sustained when he was shot at his house earlier this year.

Speaking on a SuperSport television program, Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung explained how Tshabalala ended up with the nickname "Screamer".

"He was an entertainer, that is why we even called him Screamer because he used to do things on the pitch that were just not normal for a soccer player," Motaung said.

"The issue of screaming it's one thing that's very unique, and I think even him he doesn't know how the whole thing came about.

"Because I remember in one match where he wanted to dribble past an opponent and he couldn't see the way through and he decided to stop.

"He then started screaming, so that sort of confused the opponent thinking maybe the referee had said something or maybe something had gone wrong.

"And all of a sudden Screamer started running forward with the ball, so from there on the late Ewert Nene started encouraging him.

"Every time he had the ball the late Ewert Nene would say to him, screamer! memeza! screamer! memeza phela sbali, he used to call him sbali [laughs].

"Ewert Nene would do that each time he wanted to add some spice in the game, he would encourage Screamer to scream."
