Showboating: 'You can't entertain people if you are losing'

The legendary Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane has broken his silence regarding the reaction to Kaizer Chiefs fan favorite Mfundo Vilakazi's showboating.

The youngster was enjoying himself in the pre-season friendly against Young Africans SC in Bloemfontein on Sunday, giving the Tanzanian giants a taste of idiski.

However, Amakhosi lost the Toyota Cup match by 4-0, which is something that has drawn a lot of criticism from the football fraternity.

Ngubane, who earned many of his followers through showboating, had some words of advice for the Amakhosi teenager.

"You can entertain the crowd by winning, but you can't entertain people if you are losing a match; it doesn't make sense; it questions your seriousness," Ngubane tells KickOff.

"Showboating should be left to the legends games. They are allowed to do that even if they are losing a match because they mostly play for fun in their matches.

"But in a Chiefs game, there is no friendly match because they still have to rebuild their name; we all expected more from Chiefs on Sunday.

"I'm sure the Chiefs coach did speak to the boy afterward; he is a good coach. He didn't want to embarrass the boy in front of everyone. Let's hope he told him when to do these things, where, and why.

"You can't put showboating and a loss in one sentence. Showboating was made for wins. Trust me I know I come from there.

"To be honest it shouldn't be called showboating, it's showboating in Europe because there they are not gifted in football like we do. Here it should be called 'our football', but we must know it's only done if you are winning. It's for winners.

"But at the same time, we should remember that there are players for who this showboating is their style of play; you can name Professor Ngubane, Ronaldinho, Jomo Sono; to us, it came naturally. Hence I sometimes have a problem with the word showboating.

"The problem comes when you are doing it for the sake of it, for no purpose. I  used to do it because I didn't have pace. I was not fast but I was a thinker.

"I'd do it to prevent the opponent from stealing the ball from me. We used it to create goals.

"I would do it when we were leading with five minutes before the final whistle. That would kill the opponents' spirit. But to do it and lose 4-0, that I don't understand."
