Kaizer Jr gives Petersen, Bvuma wake-up call

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr has opened up on the goalkeeping situation at the club after the signing of Fiacre Ntwari.

Chiefs have lacked stability in their goalkeeping department in recent years, especially since veteran shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune was sidelined over various reasons.

Neither Brandon Petersen nor Bruce Bvuma has taken the opportunity to become a clear choice in goal, with suggestions going around that Amakhosi need a shot-stopper from the market to become a long-term successor to Khune.

Amakhosi seemingly reacted to those calls after they announced the signing of Ntwari on a four-year-contract, with an option to extend.

"It definitely is [a long-term commitment], in terms of our vision moving forward. We've brought a 24-year-old, a national team goalkeeper, great attributes, technically gifted on the feet, great handling skills," Motaung Jr said on Ntwari's long-term deal on SuperSport TV.

"And I think for us where we're going as a club, we're looking to bring the best quality in all departments. He has a bright future ahead of him. He's coming into a setup with an amazing goalkeeper coach.

"And also to compete, because we've got Brandon and Bruce who have worked hard this pre-season and their level will be raised, we're looking forward to what that department will bring to the fore."

Petersen started in the Toyota Cup pre-season friendly against Young Africans, where Amakhosi suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat.

With doubts over the former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper and Bvuma still fresh in Chiefs supporters' minds, would Ntwari assume the number one goalkeeper duties ahead of the new season?

"I think everyone out there is starting on a clean-slate, everyone has to prove himself. No one is guaranteed a place in the starting eleven and I think everyone is aware of that, we'll see as time goes on," Motaung Jr responded when asked on whether the Rwandan number one would become the first choice even at club level.
