Why more Downs players could be snatched by Chiefs

A door could be open for more players to join Kaizer Chiefs from Mamelodi Sundowns after revelations by coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

Chiefs have continued to rope in former Sundowns stars, who were deemed surplus to requirements after they signed Gaston Sirino as a free agent.

Amakhosi famously brought in the likes of Jose Torrealba, Katlego Mphela, Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and to an extent, Keagan Dolly, to mention a few in recent years, as free agents, although Dolly was signed after a spell in France.

The Brazilians midfielder Themba Zwane, despite his legendary status, waited long before his contract was officially announced over the weekend, on a one-year contract.

Masandawana head coach Mngqithi believes it is the right thing for older players like Zwane to get only a one-year contract to keep them on their toes, contrary to suggestions by supporters that the 35-year-old deserved a longer commitment from the club.

"I think it's the right thing to do. Everybody is free to have his opinion but I think it's the right thing to do," Mngqithi told journalists at an MTN8 quarter-finals post-match press conference after a narrow win over Polokwane City.

"Because for players that age is important to keep them on their toes. I don't think it necessarily means he'll be at the club after one year.

"But for him to stay sharp it's important to know that he has to fight for the next contract," he said.

"And I think if all PSL clubs can adopt that, it will be the best thing that we can do for our football. Because I've seen players they want to get a four-year contract, because they know they are looking for retirement and you want them to perform every week.

"I think it's a good thing and I think 'Mshishi' is the right player for that because he is a very professional player. He will work very hard. He will know he will not sit on his laurels, he has to give it his best shot and I'm very confident he will do very well," Mngqithi added.

However, in the transfer market, Sundowns could leave themselves vulnerable to other big teams like Chiefs, who could entice their older star players with longer-term contracts, for their financial security.
