Pirates-bound star pens emotional message

Newly-signed Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen has penned an emotional tribute to former club Stellenbosch FC, ahead of his move to the Highveld to link up with the Soweto giants.

Pirates confirmed on Monday, via the club's official website, that the 27-year-old would be joining on a three-year deal, with an option to extend by a further two years.

The move marks an end to Van Rooyen's eight-year stay with the club based in his hometown.

The right-back has since taken to the social media platform Instagram to pen a touching farewell.

"As I depart Stellenbosch Football Club, I want to say thank you to my teammates, and coaches, as well as to Mr Rob Benadie, Mr Garth Le Roux and the rest of the staff who played a role in my journey at the Club," he wrote.

"I am eternally grateful for your support and the trust you placed in me, and I will forever cherish the memories we made together.

"I also want thank all of our loyal Stellies supporters. I am overwhelmed by the backing we received as a team and for the support I received personally.

"Stellenbosch will always be home, and it was a huge honour and privilege for me to play in front of the crowd at Danie Craven Stadium.

"I will always remember those moments and I know that I will carry your support with me on the next step of my journey."

He made 35 appearances across all competitions, missing just six of Stellies' matches overall last term.

Van Rooyen will, however, not be able to play a part in the Buccaneers' MTN8 campaign, having already featured for Stellenbosch in the quarter-finals.

The speedy defender will face stiff competition for a starting berth, with Thabiso Monyane, Bandile Shandu and Thabiso Lebitso all vying for a spot.
