5 attributes of Chiefs new defender revealed

Following reports that Kaizer Chiefs have dotted the i's and crossed the t's in bringing Angolan defender Inacio Miguel over to Naturena, KickOff reveals five factors he is all about.

With the experience he has amassed, Miguel is expected to bring some bite to a Chiefs defence that was conceding at will last season.

His acquisition, though, is yet to be officially announced by the Naturena-based outfit.

Style of play

Miguel is understood to have been recommended to the club by head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is looking for his centre-backs to be comfortable on the ball as much as they can tightly defend.

The 28-year-old fits that profile, as he can play quite well from the back, whether it is on the ground, over the top or diagonals, with attributes of a Brazilian defender and is neat in winning balls.

Amakhosi haven't had a centre-back comfortable on the ball for some time, with Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Given Msimango and Zitha Kwinika all jittery playing from the back.

Tactical fit

Miguel is at home playing centre-back positions, but he can also play as a right-back, although not the right wingback that overlaps and brings crosses into the area.

At Petro de Luanda, although he did not play as much as he would have liked last season, he usually played as a sweeper or the right-side of a three-man centre defence.

The Angolan featured for Petro against eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the African Football League quarter-finals over two legs last season, as right-back and right-sided centre-back.

Goal threat

When the Soweto giants last competed for the league title, in 2019/20, and when they last won league titles under Stuart Baxter, they had a fearsome aerial threat, with defenders chipping in with goals.

Miguel has a good technique attacking the ball, both in the air and on the ground, with 15 goal contributions as a defender so far in his career.

National team

He made his debut for the Palancas Negras three years ago and has been capped five times.

The 28-year-old featured in competitive matches in all the games, in the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Stand a chance to win a Mamelodi Sundowns Home and Away Replica shirts for the 2024/25 season; valued at R1199 per shirt.

Miguel last featured for Angola as a late substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde in November last year.

Height

Centre-backs are usually judged on height and at 1,85 meters, he is more or less in the same level as the likes of Ditlhokwe, Edmilson Dove and Given Msimango, with new signing Rushwin Dortley currently the tallest centre-back at Naturena, at 1,92 meters.

Kwinika is the shortest, at 1,8 meters.
