Esquivel loses his cool on debut after Downs exit

Recently departed Mamelodi Sundowns star Matias Esquivel seemingly lost his cool during a feisty exchange in his debut appearance for CA Talleres on Sunday.

It came as somewhat of a shock when it was announced earlier this month that Esquivel would be leaving Sundowns after just one half-season at the club.

The Argentine became the most expensive signing in South African football history when Downs splashed a staggering €2.3 million (R45.2 million) to lure him away from Lanus in January 2024.

However, the 25-year-old struggled to adapt at Masandawana under former boss Rulani Mokwena, making only 13 appearances, including six starts, before he was sent out on a loan deal back to Argentina earlier this month.

On Sunday, he made his debut for Talleres as they claimed a 2-1 win over Independiente Rivadavia in the Argentine Primera Division.

Drama unfolded after the match, though, with Esquivel getting involved in a hostile exchange with Nahuel Gallardo, who is the son of Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo.

Esquivel addressed the conflict in a post-match interview, revealing that Gallardo put his hands on his chest and drew an imaginary band on his shirt to mock Talleres players after they lost to his father's club, River Plate, in a first-leg round of 16 clash in the Copa Libertadores last week.

"Gallardo's son, whose name I don't even know, was making gestures and telling us that we had been kicked. But he is here at Independiente Rivadavia, he is not playing at River," Esquivel explained, according to Ole.

"I went and told him: 'If you have anything, call your dad to play again and we'll see what happens.'

"I'm not excited, but it's another game. He's playing here at Independiente and he's also a substitute. So he can't say anything."

With the attacking midfielder having made his debut for Talleres, it is reported that the Argentine club do have an option to buy him permanently from Sundowns at the end of the season.
