Galaxy v Pirates rematch in danger

Jwaneng Galaxy head coach Morena Ramoreboli has drawn inspiration from Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo, in a quest for a potential CAF Champions League rematch with Orlando Pirates.

The bookmakers considered Galaxy favourites to meet Pirates in the competition's second preliminary round.

However, the Botswana outfit narrowly lost 1-0 to African Stars of Namibia, in the first preliminary round, first leg encounter away from home.

The Soweto giants also had a disappointing result against Madagascan outfit Disciples FC after a goalless draw in the first-leg.

With the South Africans still expected to progress to the second round, Ramoreboli has to find a way to navigate past a low block, if the Pirates v Galaxy rematch is to happen.

"We complicated things for ourselves, we made things difficult. But we have to go back, find a proper way of breaking the lines. I can tell you they have one goal, they are not going to change how they play," Ramoreboli said in a post-match press conference.

"They're still gonna play with that low block. We need to be ready again for counter-attack.

"We want to progress to the second phase and for us to progress, it means we need to give more than what we've given. We need to understand we're playing against a very structured team, they believe in that low block and they master it."

Tebogo became the first African to win a gold medal in the men's 200m sprint at the 2024 Olympics and the South African tactician hopes such heroics will inspire his charges in the second leg.

"I think the simplest motivation that one can refer to is what Tebogo Letsile did. At some point, we never thought he would come back with a gold medal, but he did. It also comes from the mental strength. It doesn't matter how you performed in the previous 90 minutes," Ramoreboli offered.

Pirates were knocked out by Galaxy in the second preliminary round of the same tournament last season.
