Stellies thrash Hotspurs to advance in Confed Cup

Stellenbosch FC advanced to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after thrashing Nsingizini Hotspurs 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Maroons debuted youngsters Langelihle Phili and Liam De Kock, with reported target of Kaizer Chiefs Fawaaz Basadien also given a starting berth.

Stellies didn't waste time to get going but opened proceedings on ten minutes after Lehlohonolo Mojela headed in following a goal-mouth scramble in the box.

Phili happened to see a dream debut well inside the half-hour mark when he nudged possession off smart penetration play to get inside and fired in emphatically.

Both Phili and Mojela enjoyed a torrid time out on the field and in fact threatened to bag a double ahead of halftime, but smart piece of defending denied either.

Stellenbosch made a trio of substitutes before the second half, as new boy Omega Mdaka, Jayden Adams and Devon Titus replaced Basadien, Sihle Ndluli and Kyle Jurgens.

De Jong helped himself to the score-board five minutes from the interval when he capitalised on a defensive blunder from Hotspurs and tapped in easily.

Hotspurs, who by the way also happened to play last weekend's first-leg in Durban, battled to match the fortitude the men from the Winelands dished out as it remained a one-way traffic.

Substitute Titus came inches to getting one in in the final exchanges, but unfortunately dragged across the face of goal with no one to help it in.

Mdaka put his name in the headlights five minutes before time when pounced on uncertainty by the Eswatini boys and fired in to mark his debut in style.

Another play from the dugout in Mervin Boji came to the fore in the last minute and made it five with a decent strike and ultimately settled the clash as a contest.

Confirmed line-ups:

Stellenbosch: Stephens, Moloisane, Jurgens, Basadien, De Kock, Palace, Nduli, De Jong, Phili, Barns, Mojela

Subs: Langeveldt, Mcaba, Mdaka, Smith, Adams, Titus, Mini, Boji
