OFFICIAL: Nigeria's new head coach confirmed

Nigeria have officially announced their new head coach after their previous boss resigned following their failure to beat South Africa and Benin.

The Super Eagles hot seat has been vacant since shortly after the last round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, during which the west African giants were unable to attain a victory.

Finidi George was at the helm for the encounters against Bafana Bafana and Benin, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) then insisted on appointing a technical advisor to work above him after losing to Gernot Rohr's Benin.

This decision led to the former winger resigning, and the NFF have been looking for a successor ever since.

There have been multiple head coaches who have been linked with the position, but with qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to commence next week, there was an urgent need for the NFF chiefs to make an appointment.

They have now decided that former Bayern Munich striker Bruno Labbadia is the man to lead the three-time African champions for the foreseeable future.

An official statement posted by the NFF on their social media channels read: "The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria's Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.

"NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said in the early hours of Tuesday: 'The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.'"

Labbadia becomes the sixth German tactician to take charge of the African powerhouse, and will begin his reign as the nation's head coach when he goes up against former Nigeria head coach, and compatriot, Rohr in their first match of 2025 AFCON qualification next month.
