In this week's edition of Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates striker James Mothibi.
Whose Locker Room are we in today?
"James Mothibi, the founder of Kuruman-based James Mothibi Sports Academy. We just need a sponsorship of a 22-seater bus and a car for the logistics."
Who was always late?
"Tso Vilakazi was always late. If we are travelling with the club buses, he is late, and when we get to training, he is late. He was a family man, so he had many duties at home. So he always hid behind the parental responsibilities.
"There are so many excuses you can have if you are married."
Any interesting rituals before they played?
"I used to find a lot of stuff in the toilet before our matches. I don't know who those things belonged to, but yes some players used muti.
"Some players had what we called safety belts [some strings], tied around in their bodies and some in their waists. You couldn't tell if they were from churches or traditional healers. Some of these strings were black and some were green. Some had something that looked like a small purse or tea bag tied on them."
Who was the jokester?
"At Pirates, we had lots of characters; Steve Lekoelea, Gift Leremi, Tso Vilakazi, Thapelo Liau, Sibusiso Mazibuko, and even myself.
"Steve used to get his jokes in the taxi rank and the car wash, those were his chilling spots."
Was it a muti changeroom?
"Irvin Khoza will kill me [laughs]."
Who was the singer?
"Pule, the former Orlando Pirates kit manager, liked leading the songs. He came to Pirates to trial, and he was a good left-footed player, but after not making it, he asked for a job, and the club gave him a job."
Who was the best dressed and the worst dressed?
"The best dressed were Steve Lekoelea and Gift Leremi. Steve used to wear expensive labels but couldn't match his clothes very well; his clothes were not matching. And on the other hand, Gift used to wear normal brands like UZZI, but he knew how to match them nicely.
"The worst dressed was Tonic Chabalala; he is going to kill me for this [laughs]; at Pirates, you were not allowed to dress in just anything you came across, the likes of Excellent Walaza came there dressed in this brand Ama-Kip Kip, but they were quietly told to stop it.
"So Tonic Chabalala was very fond of Lacoste, sometimes he would dress in a tracksuit but wear formal shoes. And there was this goalkeeper Mayala, he didn't have good taste when it came to clothes."
Who never showered?
"We all showered unless we had to rush somewhere."
Rate the coach's team talk
"There were two coaches, not one. The first one is Mlungisi Professor Ngubane, as his player, he gave you freedom on the pitch. He coached me at African Wanderers. And the second one is Kostadin Papic, that one liked my work and the way I was pushing my teammates at training."
