'Siyabonga' says Arsenal stars ahead of Betway Prem start

With Betway having become the new title sponsor for the South African top-flight, it appears that places like Soweto and KwaMashu have become a rather familiar name to some Premier League footballers you would probably least expect. Here's a look!

The story

In July 2024, global betting company Betway announced a lucrative title sponsorship deal with the PSL, with the two parties joining forces in a three-year deal worth approximately R900 million.

The deal came after DStv and the PSL severed ties a year earlier than expected, paving the way for the league's fourth title sponsor since it was formally founded in 1996.

With the a major change now in place, 2024/25 Betway Premiership season will begin later than usual, with the curtain of the the new campaign set to be raised on 14 September.

With that said, the sporting brand has seemingly piqued the interest of some football enthusiast in South Africa with a commercial of Arsenal stars reciting some familiar names to those in Mzansi.

The commercial includes the likes of Oleksander Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus, and Cedric Soares mentioning famous South African townships like Soweto in Johannesburg, KwaMashu in Durban , and Langa in Cape Town.

The advert is produced in partnership with the betting brand as well as the Gunners, who, unfortunately have never had a South African player represent them at senior professional level part from Dan le Roux in the 1950s, as per Transfermarkt.

This has left some has left a mixed bag of reactions from some locals, with some finding a bit of humour in the fact that top-class footballers in the Premier League are able to recite these iconic Mzansi townships.
