New CAF test for Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns will start their CAF Champions League campaign against a completely new opponent that they have never met in any of the continental club competitions.

Sundowns will enter the Champions League in the second round after getting a bye in the first qualifying round with Mbabane Swallows as the opposition.

Swallows are the champions of Eswatini and got past the champions of neighbouring Mozambique – Ferroviario da Beira on an aggregate score of 1-0.

The club from Eswatini have Caleb Ngwenya as head coach and have former Bush Bucks and Golden Arrows striker Siza Dlamini in their technical team.

Swallows is one of the big three in Eswatini which has Manzini Wanderers and Mbabane Highlanders.

Their biggest challenge in facing Sundowns is that with Eswatini having no CAF approved stadiums, they played the home leg of their first round at Lucas Moripe Stadium on August 16.

With the Atteridgeville venue being Sundowns' home ground, it will give The Brazilians the advantage of basically playing both legs at home.

Swallows will only be the second club from Eswatini to ever face Sundowns in any of CAF's inter-club competitions.

In 2007, The Brazilians walloped Royal Leopards 6-2 on aggregate in the preliminary round of that year's Champions League.

Sundowns won the first leg 4-2 with Jose Torrealba netting a hattrick and Surprise Moriri adding the fourth.

For the return leg, it was Lerato Chabangu and Peter Ndlovu with the goals.

Swallows captain Khwakhe Thwala has already put on a brave face in declaring that they will match Sundowns.

"We are going to play Sundowns soon and in SA they will be starting their league like us, so I think we will manage to match Sundowns," says Thwala.

This will be the first ever meeting between Sundowns and Swallows.
