‘I was surprised that he was even selected'

The consideration of Holland born South African striker Simon van Duivenbooden for Bafana Bafana has left retired goalkeeper Hans Vonk curious.

Vonk is well informed about Dutch football having played all his career there except for the years he spent at Ajax Cape Town.

Hugo Broos called up van Duivenbooden, before dropping him for his final squad due to play Uganda and South Sudan during this international break.

"It is important that you play, and you play at a high level.

"I didn't select him because it is not the moment now as he doesn't the level to play for Bafana now," pointed out Broos this week in explaining why he dropped the towering forward, who is on the books of Dutch Second Division club Vitesse Arnhem.

Van Duivenbooden was born in Holland but has South African family roots, which explains his eligibility for Bafana as he now holds the relevant passport.

"What we need to understand is that there is a huge difference between playing Second Division football here in Holland and international football," Vonk tells KickOff.

"I don't know if he is someone who will make Bafana Bafana better while playing in the Second Division in Holland.

"I haven't seen him playing live, but I'm curious to see if he is the one who will make Bafana Bafana better.

"I was surprised that he was even selected for the squad while playing in the Second Division in Holland, where the level is not that high.

"The level in the Second Division is far below international football even if it is an African country.

"I'm curious if this guy can bridge the gap between Second Division in Holland and international football in Africa.

"The Second Division in Holland is not the league where you want your national team players to be playing, but I will still watch him when his team plays from now onward.

"When I came to Bafana, I was in the top league, where Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar also played," explains Vonk.
