Rulani's father: Pirates jersey no.10 must remain in Scara's grave

Former Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos player Julius 'KK' Sono has weighed in on the debate about the club's iconic jersey number 10.

The jersey has been retired by Pirates chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza in honour of the club's great, Dr. Jomo Sono.

Some of the club's fans calling for the number to be brought out of retirement and handed to their favourite, Patrick Maswangwanyi.

Sono says handing over the jersey number to another player will anger their late father Eric 'Scara' Sono.

"This is a very important issue, retiring my brother's jersey number 10 shows the respect he commands from the club," Sono tells KickOff.

"The reason Jomo donned number 10 was to honour and respect his father, Scara Sono. All our father's jerseys has been put in our father's grave as a sign of respect.

"Even now, each time a family member takes a new journey in his life or career, we go to that grave to inform our great ancestor, Scara Sono.

"If God takes away Mr. Irvin Khoza, we don't know where that is going to put me, Jomo, and Rulani (Mokwena) in football, as Scara's descendants," the legend explained.

"So it's important to leave the jersey where it belongs. Jomo loves Pirates, there are too many of Scara's jerseys that Jomo has put in our father's grave. Scara is a happy ghost where he is because he is the Pirates' ancestor.

"I've got big respect for Mr. Khoza and Jomo. We respect Khoza's leadership. So we will continue to protect Mr. Khoza up to a time when he hands over the reins.

"So because of all the number 10 Pirates jerseys Jomo places in our father's grave, each time Pirates play, Scara Sono plays with them.

"The Shangaan tribe come far with Pirates, you can count from Irvin Khoza, Shakes Mashaba, Jomo Sono, Chippa Chauke, Julius Sono, Shuffle Mkhari, that's the ancestors' plan.

"Let me come to Maswangwanyi, another descendant of the Shangaan or Tsonga people, the reason people want him to don the number 10 jersey is because he plays like a number 10.

"But he must understand that jersey belongs to a great Buccaneer, Scara Sono; that's how much Jomo respects and honours his father, hence, the graveyard where our father is buried is full of old and new Pirates number 10 jerseys. The number belongs to Scara, and not necessarily to the Sonos. To have luck you need to appease your ancestors. So no one should wear it, it should remain where it is, in Scara's grave.

"Maswangwanyi must forget about the number 10 because it's with its owner in the graveyard, but he must never stop to play like a number 10."
