First win, how Nabi compares to previous Chiefs coaches

The fact that Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi made a piece of history at the club by just winning his first official match in charge, could signify what Amakhosi lacked in previous coaches since Stuart Baxter in 2012.

Nabi started his reign at Chiefs with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Marumo Gallants on Saturday, and to say it is a victory the club desperately needed would be an understatement.

The neutrals could feel a tinge of exaggeration with the Tunisian winning his first official match at the side, but it speaks volumes that he became the first Glamour Boys coach to win his first league match in charge since Baxter in some 12 years ago.

Perhaps the Soweto giants' struggles over the years with their choice of coaches makes Nabi's win quite significant, as actually, he is already in a league of his own considering that Baxter actually lost his first official match in charge that season, a 4-1 hammering by Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals.

The English coach redeemed himself with a 6-0 thrashing of AmaZulu FC in the league opener as Amakhosi went on to win the league title and the Nedbank Cup.

Given that they have not won a trophy since the Baxter era, the supporters would be hoping that Nabi's first victory is a big sign of positive changes to end their near-decade-long wait for a trophy.

For the record, Ernst Middendorp also won his first game in charge in December 2018, a 1-0 league triumph over SuperSport United, but it was in his second spell as Chiefs coach.

The Glamour Boys' opening league victory was a first since 2019/20 under the same Middendorp, where they lost the league title in the last 30 minutes of that campaign.

Since Baxter in 2012, all of Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane, Baxter in his second spell, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson failed to win their first league matches, ironically forming a series of mediocre season and no trophies at Naturena.
