Rayners keeps unique factor at Sundowns

The goal scored by Iqraam Rayners as Mamelodi Sundowns swept past the lightweight challenge of Mbabane Swallows carried significance for the speedy forward.

Sundowns were 4-0 winners over Swallows in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round match, with Rayners adding the third just before the break.

That striker announced his arrival at Sundowns and kept his trend of scoring on debut whenever he has made a move as a top-league player.

Rayners scored on debut for SuperSport United in the MTN8 quarterfinals against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in October 2020 after joining from Stellenbosch FC.

Matsatsantsa won that match 3-2.

Then after his stay at SuperSport didn't work out, he returned to familiar territory in the Cape Winelands at the beginning of 2023 and scored on debut again in a league match against Chippa United.

Stellies won 2-1 and the burly forward went on to score 15 in half-a-season.

On his arrival in the first team at Santos, Rayners scored against Garankuwa United during the 2014/15 season playing in the First Division when he had limited minutes playing under Farouk Abrahams.

It was only upon his first arrival at Stellies that he didn't score on debut as he needed up to seven games to net his first.

At Chloorkop, Rayners will be aiming to improve on the 17 goals that he scored last season at Stellies, which will then put him in contention for the Golden Boot award.

Rayners scored 32 goals in the 18 months that he spent back at Stellenbosch for his second stint.

The 28-year-old has added another dimension to the Downs frontline that has for long looked up to Peter Shalulile for goals but now also has Arthur Sales and Abubeker Nasir.
