‘Pick and shovel’ and ‘no piece of cake’

The Saturday marked down for the 50th edition of the MTN8 final is finally upon us with Orlando Pirates aiming to become the first club to lift this trophy three times in a row.

Jose Riveiro will also arrive at Moses Mabhida Stadium targeting his fifth trophy since taking over in July 2022.

Stellenbosch FC will be an opposition buoyed by the fact that they have won three out of five in contests pitting them against a Riveiro-coached Pirates.

While forever keeping a calm demeanour yet blessed with an observant eye and an analytical ability, the Spaniard has taken note of this.

"Our players are smart to appreciate, they know football, they appreciate what Stellenbosch is doing," notes Riveiro.

"They are not taking Stellenbosch like a minor thing.

"You can be sure (about that).

"We know it is going to be... and out of all these finals, this will be the toughest final because of the characteristic of our opponent.

"So, for me one, thing is to feel you are favourite and something that you have to accept in our space… we are Orlando Pirates.

"…I don't think anybody is going to the field on Saturday feeling that the job is done before we start running.

"We need to run a lot, it is going to be a pick and shovel game if we want to make it.

"It is the only way to do it against a team like Stellenbosch, so there is not going to be a small space for feeling relaxed, and we are used to it.

"When you are representing a big club like Orlando Pirates like we are… I used to say when the most complicated part is to win games that everybody thinks you have already won.

"Few days ago, it happened against Richards Bay and whatever happens on Saturday is not because we are thinking it is going to be a piece of cake.

"No, we are not," says Riveiro.
