Benzema makes his pick to host AFCON: 'Why not?'

2022 Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema has made his pick as to which country he would like to see host the Africa Cup of Nations.

The host for the next two AFCONs have already been decided, with Morocco set to stage the next edition, which kicks off in December 2025.

In 2027, it will be the first time that three nations will jointly host the competition, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda slated to do the honours.

It is yet to be confirmed who will host the 2029 showpiece, but Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia has officially submitted a request to CAF for the hosting rights, according to The Ethiopian Herald.

Benzema has since revealed that he would ideally like to see Algeria host the competition.

The Al Ittihad star's parents are of Algerian descent, and the 36-year-old was recently in the north African country.

"The trip was great, with a warm welcome. The country is developing, there is good infrastructure. It can organise an African Cup. Why not? Inch'Allah," he said, per Afrik-Foot.

It was just a few months ago that Benzema visited Algeria for the first time to pay respect to his roots.

"It's my first time in Algeria and in Bejaia, so I'm very happy to be here," he told Africanews in June.

"I'm going to see my family and share moments with the Algerians, it's nothing but happiness."

The Real Madrid legend also visited his father's native village, Tighzert, in the Ait Djellil commune.

"We're going to give him a warm and popular welcome. He will visit his grandfather's house and pay his respects at the village cemetery," Ghani Ouali, mayor of Ait Djellil, told Algerian media at the time.
