Broos interferes with Bafana players' club transfers?

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos seems to be overstepping his role with his involvement regarding transfers of PSL players, if recent comments are anything to go by.

After Cassius Mailula had a breakthrough PSL season in 2022/23, with interest from overseas, Broos warned he was not ready to move abroad and needed at least one more season with Mamelodi Sundowns, so as to develop his game more.

However, the attacker signed for Toronto FC in July last year and, after his game-time struggles, the Belgian did not call him up, after reminding South Africans that he saw the situation coming, before apportioning blame on his agent.

Broos has also remained skeptical about former Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo returning to the national team after linking up with Algerian giants CR Belouizdad, warning that even Elias Mokwana is on the edge after his big-money move to Esperance de Tunis.

The 72-year-old then suggested he was happy that Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis' move to either MC Alger or Esperance did not go through, after advising the player not to move to North Africa.

"I'm disappointed that he didn't move, but I'm happy because if it was true he is going to Algiers..." said Broos after his squad announcement on SABC Sport.

"I said to him in September when we were in camp: 'I know there's money, but it's not the right team for you'. So, for that, I am happy that he is still in Polokwane City. He will always play there, which is a good thing. And again, you see what happens with the guy Mayo, who is not playing.

"It's a strange mentality in the North of Africa and it is not only your quality that is important, it is also your mentality. You have to adapt to that mentality and that is not easy.

"So, let's hope the boys that are there start playing in the next month. I'm happy that Appollis is still here," the former Cameroon coach added.

Broos' comments on Mayo sound strange considering he has played in all their three league games so far and also featured in their CAF Champions League second preliminary round, second-leg match against AS Douanes, where Belouizdad qualified for the group stages after victory on penalties.

The Bafana coach has in the past also advised Relebohile Mofokeng to stay at least another season at Orlando Pirates and especially gain international experience in the CAF Champions League, after the teenage sensation was linked with an overseas move at the back-end of last term.
